Quality Committee

The MCSQI Quality Committee, led by Chair Glenn Whitman, MD, and Co-Chair Todd Massey, MD, oversees the organization’s quality improvement efforts. This multidisciplinary committee comprises surgeons, data managers, intensivists, advanced practice providers, and cardiovascular administrators from 11 hospitals. The group reviews statewide data from the STS registry on a quarterly basis, identifying performance variances and developing best practice guidelines that have significantly improved outcomes at individual hospitals.
The Structural Heart (chaired by Doug Anderson, MD) and Perfusion Workgroups (chaired by Charlie Evans, MD), which focus on specialized aspects of cardiac care, function as subsets of the Quality Committee. These workgroups delve into targeted areas to enhance patient outcomes and support the committee's broader mission.
Over the past decade, MCSQI has developed key guidelines in areas such as Wound Healing, Blood Management, Early Extubation, Readmission Reduction, and STS Data Management. In 2023, Blood Glucose Management Guidelines were also introduced, further advancing quality care across Maryland hospitals.
